The Five Pillars of Islam

Islam is built upon five foundational acts known as the Five Pillars. These pillars structure a Muslim’s life spiritually, morally, and socially.

1. Shahada (Declaration of Faith)

“There is no god worthy of worship except Allah, and Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah.”

This is the foundation of belief. It affirms pure monotheism. Learn more about belief in our What Is Islam? guide.

2. Salah (Prayer)

Muslims pray five times daily. Prayer builds discipline and connection with Allah. If you are new, begin with How to Pray.

3. Zakat (Charity)

Eligible Muslims give a portion of their savings yearly to support the poor. This pillar strengthens compassion and social responsibility.

4. Sawm (Fasting in Ramadan)

Muslims fast from dawn to sunset during Ramadan. Fasting develops self-control, gratitude, and empathy.

5. Hajj (Pilgrimage)

Once in a lifetime, if financially and physically able, a Muslim travels to Makkah to perform pilgrimage.
